My Most Interesting Closet Design Project

0

I have been in the business of closet design for a number of years now, and I think that I am pretty good at what I do. My approach is to maximize the amount of usable space in a closet, and at the same time making it as simple or elaborate as the customers budget dictates. Smaller jobs often involve just a few wire racks and perhaps adding a second hanging bar. My favorite closet makeovers are always the large walk-in closets with a decent enough budget so I can include built-ins and accessorize with furniture.

My business has been expanding over the past few years. With so much interest in home organization and minimalist design, there is no shortage of work. And the range of requests does keep me on my toes. But even so, I don't often get calls from clients with closet requests that I haven't already seen or built before.

Well, just when you think that you have seen it all and there is no one better prepared to handle any job in your business, a surprise will inevitably come your way. This is what happened to me just last week. I got a closet design request that threw me for a loop, and for a second I doubted whether I was really ready to handle this particular closet renovation. However, I decided that taking on the job would be at the very least interesting, and also further expand my range of closet design expertise.

This was a closet design request that I just couldn't turn down. A few weeks ago my sister asked if I was available to watch my nephew for the weekend, while she and my brother-in-law went to a conference a few hours out of town. Unbeknown to me, my sister had already cut a deal with my nephew. He was a less than happy to be left at home alone for the weekend, so the only way my sister could convince him was to tell him that his closet designing aunt would come over for the weekend, and she would help him do a closet makeover any way he wanted. When I was told that this was the babysitting past-time, actually I thought it was a great way to keep us both occupied.

When I arrived at the house with my organizer catalogs and color swatches in hand, I was greeted by my sister and nephew. My sister gave me the run down on where everything was, said a quick goodbye to my nephew saying "have fun with your closet redesign dear", and they were gone. So now to the serious design work. I was surprised to see how prepared my nephew was, with his own pile of closet design inspiration clippings. But upon closer inspection, it became apparent that my nephew was not interested in any type of storage solutions what so ever. The clippings he handed me were assorted castle and dungeon pictures! A cell-phone call later and it was confirmed - we were redesigning a closet play room, of the medieval vintage.

Even with my lack of experience with this particular closet design project, I came away with some new skills and everyone was quite happy with the result, especially my nephew. Regardless of the design challenge that is thrown at you, if you approach it with an open mind, you may surprise yourself with skills you didn't know you had. So get started on that closet design project you've been dreading for years - whatever goal you have in mind for the finished product, it is bound to improve your currently underused cluttered excuse for a closet.

Interesting Closet Design

0

In my business, I am always trying to make the most efficient use of closet space. I have made customized closet storage systems for large closets and small closets. I have been asked to create closet organization systems on a minimal budget and I have been asked to design luxurious closets with no expense spared. My work has run the gamut from huge walk in closets to very small reach in closets.

The business of closet design has seen a resurgence over the past few years, so my business has been doing quite well. No complaints from me at least. With the added business, I had thought that I had just about run into any closet design project possible. Although I try to be imaginative and creative with each new job, there are really only so many problems and solutions you will encounter in the business of closets.

I was soon to discover that as experienced as I am, and with the variety of closets that I had already worked on and renovated, there were still some closet design jobs that could totally surprise me. Last week was one of these times. I didn't know it at the time, but as it turned out, what I thought would be a straight-forward design job would actually turn out to be a totally unexpected design challenge.

Well, after I got over the initial surprise, and panic that I wasn't prepared for this sort of closet make-over, I decided that this after all was just a closet design with a different look. In the end I created a great castle within a closet, and I incorporated some great storage ideas to boot. Remember that whatever closet design challenge is thrown your way, whether it is a tiny closet with no shelves, or you have a large closet and a small budget, just use some imagination in your design and you may be surprised with the results.

Tips To Get The Most Out Of Closet Organizers

0

Storage has become such an important aspect of living, and a vital ingredient in the home. But all the storage in the world won't help if the space isn't organized. Closet organizers not only make it easier to find what you want; they actually create more usable space for you.

Nothing is more stressful than not being able to find an item in your home that you need to use or wear. By investing in closet organizing systems, you will reduce this stress and save the time you would normally have wasted looking for that elusive item. When your closets are organized, you can find what you want easily and without any stress, and consider how lovely it will be when you open the closet door to find a neat and orderly space inside.

There are numerous closet design companies, both bricks and mortar businesses and on line websites. Do some research to see what is available in the marketplace and discover which type of system will best fit your needs and your closet space. You may be able to buy modular units that just slip into place in your closets, or you might prefer to have the whole project designed and built specifically for you. You need to make the best use of the space in order to gain that valuable extra storage.

There is a choice of materials that are used for closet organizers; you might choose the plastic coated wire shelves and baskets, or you may prefer the look and solidity of wood for shelves and drawers. Steel brackets and rods are very strong to hold hanging clothes and heavy items, and are usually hidden within the closet.

Consider the use of the closet when deciding on the materials and style of the fittings. Pantry and garage closets need to have surfaces that are easy to clean. The wire shelves and baskets are a good option for pantries and linen closets as they allow for good circulation of air and limit hiding places for destructive insects.

Look for quality of finish and all-around strength when choosing the style and the company you will go with. The system needs to look good and to be serviceable for the purpose it is designed for. Consider the weight the shelving and rods will need to hold; eliminate any sharp corners that could cause damage; check that the shelves and drawers are deep enough for your purpose.

The closet organizers you choose need to be able to do the job you want, so make sure you don't settle for less than you need. Continue to search to find a solution that meets your needs or find a manufacturer that will design and make a solution for you.

Create Extra Storage With Closet Organizers

0

Storage has become such an important aspect of living, and a vital ingredient in the home. But all the storage in the world won't help if the space isn't organized. Closet organizers not only make it easier to find what you want; they actually create more usable space for you.

Investing in ways to get your storage areas organized will eliminate a lot of stress from your life. No more searching for that item that you knew you put "somewhere". No more time wasted looking through piles of clothing for that top you want to wear. Find what you need in an instant, know what you actually have in your closet and be able open the doors to an organized space that can always be tidy and neat.

The best place to start is by doing some research. Check out the numerous storage ideas on line, and go to your local hardware stores that usually carry storage solutions as well. Look at the range that is available and consider which one, or which combination, will suit your needs and your closets the best. There are ranges of modular units that can often just be fitted into place; some companies will design and manufacture what you want; others have products that can be adapted to your space.

Deciding from the range of materials used for closet organizers is the next step. Solid timber products provide strength and style; plastic coated wire products are usually cheaper and very versatile; brackets need to be strong and steel is a good choice here. Some people go with a combination of styles and materials to best suit their needs.

Some materials are easy to clean and should be considered for pantries and garage closets. For linen and pantry closets, the use of wire shelves and baskets allow for good air circulation to keep the contents fresh and limit infestation by insects.

Look for strength and quality of the finish when deciding between different manufacturers and styles of storage solutions. Make sure the shelves are thick enough to manage the loads they have to carry; avoid anything with sharp edges or dangerous points; check that shelves and drawers have sufficient depth to accommodate the things you will be storing in them.

Make sure the design of the closet organizers you choose are perfectly suited to you own needs, in order to make the best use of the storage space. If you can't find exactly what you need, there are companies that will custom design and make up your personalized design.

Lack of home storage is a common complaint among homeowners, but it is often more a case of lack of organization than lack of actual storage space. Closet organizers help to make the best use of the available storage in the home, and actually provide additional usable storage.

Installation of Do It Yourself Closet Organizers

0
by Joanne R. Carn

I believe this have happen to you before where you are unable to find your clothes in a real hurry? With just a little planning, you are able to transform your most disorganized closets into your best organizer companion. Your organizers must be neat and tidy so that it is efficient enough to help organize and store your pants, shirts and shoes etc.

Getting organized is not a big secret of the world. All you need to do it to install a closet organizer, be it custom made or DIY style, you need to install it either with the installation manual or with the help of workers, if it is custom made.

Read on and I will guide you along with it and I will guarantee you an organized closet organizer. If you have an old organizer, I suggest you to discard it away first before you DIY your own new closet organizer. Firstly, clear out the closet organizer you want to organize which also includes all the old shelves, rods and doors. This is also a good chance for you to get rid of any stuff that you do not want to keep and make space for new items. It also makes refilling so much easier at the later stage.

Secondly, after removing the old one, there will definitely be holes on the wall left behind and you will need to remove it. All you need is just some compound and a small knife to fill those holes up which those old organizers left behind. Then allow the compound to dry thoroughly, thereafter you will sand them smooth and then apply a thin coat of paint over it to have a better wall protection.

Thirdly, mark on the wall of the position you want your closet organizer to be set up. You will need to measure 2 inches from the ceiling downwards and then also marking a level line on the position you want to mount the closet hanging tracks. All these are to be done to prepare for the drilling process.

Fourthly, after you had marked out the area or the new position, you can then start the drilling of holes to mount the hanging tracks. One of the most important steps to take is mounting the closet hanging tracks, if not you are unable to hang your clothes in the closet organizers. Another thing to take note is that if you realize that the hanging tracks is taking on too much weight, you must narrow down the spacing between them to make the hanging tracks stronger and able to withstand more weight without giving you problems.

Fifthly, you will need to install the shelves. Start from the bottom up, choose the space between the floor and the bottom shelf and then continue installing the shelves at intervals appropriate for what you intend to store in the closet.

Last of all, after all setting up is done, the last thing you will to do is to install the hanging rod in the closet organizer for you to hang your clothes. The hanging rod also strengthen the closet structure as a whole. If you want too, you can also reinforce the tracks with toggle bolts too. You are done with the installation, happy getting organize and find your things whenever you need it even in a hurry.

Garage Storage Systems: Adding Shelves

0
by Lowes Moreen

While there are many excellent yet expensive garage storage systems out there, if you feel limited by your budget, the best thing to buy is a set of good storage shelves. Without them, you will certainly have a cluttered garage. This will happen simply by default, as items will not have a place to go!

Luckily, there are many different types of shelves made specifically for the garage. Retailers such as Target carry quality garage shelving units one can buy and install in their garage. However, note that depending on the type of shelf and the quality of the materials, the price will range from low to high.

On the lower end of the price range, finding cheap wooden shelves is easy. Another cheap option is the use of shelves made of metal wire or metal mesh. These shelves can hold a lot of items but they typically cannot hold a lot of weight. Hollow wooden and thin metal shelves are best suited for garage items such as gardening tools, toys, extra clothes, or other light-weight items that make their way into the garage unexpectedly!

Now if your budget is going to allow for, you'll find it a worthy investment of your dollars to purchase a solid shelf designed to hold hundreds of pounds. These units will offer you a more realistic solution to sorting through the items in your garage, as many items do weight quite a bit. In the long run, solid shelves are going to outlast anything hollow and cheap, too.

High end shelves offer more than just the ability to hold a lot of weight. Some models offers latched doors over the shelves, making them appear much nicer on the eyes as they hide all the clutter they hold. Other models have beautiful designs and wood finishes, putting them somewhere between a garage storage shelf and a piece of furniture.

The biggest perk of though is that offered by ceiling and wall mounted garage storage racks. Understandably, these units cost more than others but the extra money goes towards giving you some extra floor space back! Wall and ceiling mounted racks will clear up space on the ground and use space that you didn't know you had.

Garage Storage Systems: What About Shelves?

0
by Lowes Moreen

Do you find that your options are limited when you are trying to find a solution to organizing your garage? The best thing you can do then is to put some money towards good garage shelving units. Let's ponder for a moment and think - without any shelves, where would you put your things? It's guaranteed to become clutter!

We are in luck that a whole slew of different garage shelves are available on the market. Places such as Target or Home Depot offer many different models. Depending on the type of shelf it is and the quality and brand, you can pay as little or as much as you want.

Starting from the bottom price tag, hollow wooden shelves are likely the least expensive option. Related to this are the metal wire shelves. While these units can hold quite a bit of light weight items, note that they will not be suitable for anything heavy. In the long term, cheaper shelves can break under the weight of heavy items. Use cheaper shelves for items such as toys, storing out of season or old clothes, and light tools used in the garden.

The most expensive shelves have other perks involved too. Many will come with doors to cover up the items on the shelves, and even drawers for smaller items, a great place for small tools like screwdrivers and nails. With more money involved, you'll get into shelving units with beautiful wooden finishes and elegant designs.

The best feature of all though is that offered by the shelves which are mounted to either the floor or the ceiling. These models literally give you back space you never could use before! This extra money then is like buying a little bit more house for your buck. Certainly something to consider!

Cheap Closet Organizer Tips

0
by Jane A Moore

There is nothing that makes your life easier and house tidier that well thought out closet storage. Life is simpler when you know where things are. Not only will you know where everything is but your house is also easier to tidy when you have a place for everything. Carefully thought out closet storage systems are a worthwhile investment.

Even your junk closet needs a bit of organization. There are cheap and easy ways to organize a closet. One of the simplest and most inexpensive ways is to buy some easy to assemble plastic stacking shelves and some transparent plastic bins. Make sure the bins are 2 inches less in height than the height space of the shelves otherwise it will be a sticky fit. Put a 3x5 sticker on the end of each bin and make note of the contents.

The closet storage system described above can be made even cheaper with a little ingenuity. Instead of buying plastic stacking shelves look around your basement or neighborhood for bricks and pieces of 4 foot board. Wash whatever you find thoroughly and carefully. Visit your local wine store and ask for some boxes. Any type of box will do but I find liquor boxes or wine boxes to be the sturdiest and they are easy to find. Write down the contents of each bin on a piece of paper and tape the list to the end of the bin.

Another really simple and cost effective organizer solution is to use hooks for as many items as can easily be hung. You can find double hooks, and even clothes rack style hooks very inexpensively. All sorts of things that you typically find in closets can be hung up, and if you have a bunch of related things that just seem to go all over the place, consider finding a cloth shopping bag, or mesh bag to collect related items and get them out of the way by hanging them up.

Another cost free way to arrange closet storage is to examine the actual stuff that is stored in the closet. For the best organization closets' should be homogenized. That means the stuff should more or less the same and accessed at the same rate. A coat that is used every day should not be stored with a tennis racket that is never used or Christmas decorations that are pulled out once per year. If you don't use something throw it out. If you use it once or twice per year, store it in a closet with other items used with the same frequency.

With all the shows about life organizing and closet makeovers, it's easy to think that you need to go out and buy extensive and expensive organizers and organizing gadgets. This is not really necessary, and you can end up saving a lot of money by just thinking about innovative ways to create cheap closet organizers.
