Great Breakfast Nook Curtains for Your Kitchen
Studies show that people thrive off sunlight and so it is natural to want to be exposed to as much natural light as possible to start your day. Since most people eat their morning meal in their breakfast nook, this room is usually equipped with many windows on as many as three sides of the room. The fourth wall is actually open to your kitchen in most cases. You do want that natural light, but you don't want to have to suffer with direct sunlight in your eyes or with too much glare, so most homeowners add curtains to their breakfast nook.
If you are interested in a more traditional look, you will most likely install sheer curtains. Sheers are usually made of any open weave sheer fabric such as cotton, nylon or silk. The sheer curtains will allow the sunlight to enter the room under softer conditions while eliminating uncomfortable glare or direct sunlight.
Curtains are nice for the times of day when the sun is a nuisance, but you need to think about a way to pull them aside during the rest of the day. You can make a simple side pull by attaching a small piece of fabric to the curtain. This fabric can tie the pulled drapery and then be hook to the side of the window with an eyehook. Another option is just to let the sheer curtains hang at the side of the windows when not in use.
Honeycomb or cellular shades offer another option for keeping out the glaring sunlight in the morning and evening hours. This style of shade is made from a lightweight non-woven polyester fabric and allows light to filter through so you can still enjoy the benefits of natural light. Even more important to some is the insulating ability of these shades. They will help keep cool or hot air from leaving your house.
When the cellular shades are not in use, they rise to the top of the windows and take up very little room. The small storage space is possible because of the way the honeycomb shades fold together. This window treatment allows for a much more streamlined look than billowy curtains.
No matter what window covering you choose, you will probably want to dress up the choice with a valence or cornice. A valence or cornice hides any hardware at the top of the window from sight and can make a decorative statement in the room. Since the breakfast nook is usually off the kitchen, all of the decorative lines will most likely be straight and square like cabinets and appliances. A curved valence or cornice could add character to the room.
Whatever choice you make when it comes to your breakfast nook curtains, their presence will add to the appeal and value of your home. If you are looking to sell one day, including the window treatments in the price of the home can make a prospective buyer feel like they are getting more for their money as well as the peace of mind that comes with knowing part of the decorating is already done.
The installation of breakfast nook curtains could be one of the most important decorating projects in your home because they serve a useful purpose as well as provide aesthetic relief. Since the project is so important, I would recommend hiring a professional to measure, order and install the window treatments. Measuring mistakes are very easy to make and it will cost you less if the professional instead of yourself makes the mistake.
