When we think of the Southwest most of us think of desert, cactus and wide open space. When we decorate for Southwestern flavor, it is the colors of the Southwest that become important. The colors of nature abound in the Southwest. Blending into nature's palette are the colors and design associated with the Native Americans indigenous to this area.
Make sure before all is purchased for the decor that you are aware of what color scheme to go with. Many choose a neutral wall if they aren't into painting their walls bright colors. If you do this you'll need to accent with the popular southwest colors such as oranges, reds, yellows, and greens. Adding this color palette to your living room design will make it feel as if it came right from a designer.
If you are sort of scared of color and want to stay more neutral with just a hint of color then go ahead and paint your walls an off white or at least a light tan. Bring the color scheme in with the pillows on the furniture, window treatments, and even picture frames. Mix a few neutral pillows in with the mix and you'll create a great scheme of color.
If your walls are painted in bright colors, your couch and chairs should be of more subdued, perhaps even neutral tones to break up the cacophony of color. In this situation wood is a very good choice to complement the bright colors; dark woods are especially good for setting a Southwest scene. For accent pieces, ivory and turquoise is perfect with bright colors.
Native American decor is one way to really make the rooms style stand out. Many decide to purchase a wonderful woven area rug and place it on the wall as a focal point rather than on the floor where it could potentially become dirty. Carved wood pieces are another great idea to tie into your theme.
The area rug can be the last or the first item to place in the room. If you already have a theme and you have to search for a rug afterwards you'll at least know what themed colors you're looking for. If you need a bit of help in the beginning, try starting with a wonderful area rug. This will give you the kick start into a great design.
Always remember the southwest style is supposed to feel laid back and you need to enjoy yourself after your hard work is complete.

Have you ever had a vision of your living room looking like it just stepped out of the southwestern side? Well look no further. Here is a great way to bring the southwest feel into your home without having it look too awkward.
If you aren't afraid of color and don't mind painting your wall an orange or yellow then you'll want to choose your furniture wisely. You'll want more neutral pieces with a few bright colored pillows. You don't want to overwhelm the design with a horrid palette. Always remember that dark wood furniture and other pieces in the room are a great design when choosing this style.
Your accent pieces should be as near to authentic Southwestern as possible. Many of the Southwest's Native Americans weave beautiful rugs and wall hangings and artisans create wonderful carvings and works of art that look beautiful in rooms with a Southwestern theme. Look for many authentic Indian works to include in your new living room.
Whether you choose the room rugs first and design the room around the rug, or design the room and choose rugs to complete the aura of the room, look for Southwestern rugs handmade by Native Americans. You will be able to find all sizes of rugs from small to large. Native American rugs are works of art; they may tell a story or depict history or maybe they will include Kokopelli, horses, buffalo and other images of importance in their lives. Your Southwestern decor will simply not be complete without a Native American handmade woolen rug.
Always remember the southwest style is supposed to feel laid back and you need to enjoy yourself after your hard work is complete.

The living room should be an inviting space. After all, this is where we welcome our guests and spend time with them. Even as a family, hanging out in a living room that is comfortable and cozy is so much better than a room that lacks warmthI mean it metaphorically as well. Here are some basic decorating tips for improving your living room:
Your living room is usually one of the first places that people see when they enter your home. This area will give everyone the first impression. Your living area should be set up so that it is easy to maintain. Put baskets somewhere in the room and all stray items can be put in there. Having this room organized is of the utmost importance, so that when unexpected guests show up you can have the room picked up in just a couple of minutes. You should also pay attention to the type of furniture you choose for this room. If you have boring, stiff couches, nobody is going to want to lounge around in there! Laying books out onto the coffee table that people can enjoy is usually a hit, as well as having plenty of throw pillows and blankets.
Your living room should be invigorating! You can add pops of colors through throw pillows, lamps, and area rugs. An area rug will also help you to define your space. It will help you to block off the seating area from the rest of the room. These rugs can be very bold in color, as this is one of your key pieces to bringing color into your living area. You can browse online for different area rugs and ordering them through the computer will have them delivered straight to your front door. It doesn't get any easier than this! Since the rug is on the floor, you really can't go too overboard in adding color. It isn't that easily noticed, and if it is bright people will pick up on your look quicker than ever.
An area rug is the perfect finishing touch to a living room, either as a centerpiece or as an accent to furniture pieces. An area rug creates a stylish effect to the division of space and highlights items that it is paired with. Choose an area rug that meets your living room's theme.
Regardless of how you do it, be sure to remember that your living room should be inviting, colorful, and simple. You don't have to break the bank to get the look you want into your family room. Keep it as stress free as possible, so you are able to sit back and enjoy the room once it is finished. Happy decorating!

The living room is a house's main attraction, given that it is where a family entertains guests, hangs out and for many, engages in activities together. The constant activities in the living room makes this room one tired place. Yes, its look suffers too, just like an overworked person. In addition to proper maintenance, redecorating is the answer to its appearance woes.
A living room makeover doesn't have to be a once every five years project. With simple decorating moves, you can update your living room every few months or so. No big budget and no major muscle work required. All you need are a few hours of your time and some creativity coupled with practicality and voila! A new living room awaits you.
Now you can move on to dusting and polishing. Move all your knick knacks and dust. If any of your silver or glass needs cleaning, polish it with the proper cleaner. Look in the corners and on the ceiling if there's any cobwebs get a broom and get rid of them. While you are looking up check the fan blades for dust. Once you have completed the tasks up high you can look down.
Some furniture need more than just the typical dusting and wiping. Others need polishing to look good as new again. If you have wooden, brass, metal or glass items, you should be using specific cleaning products for them to maintain their glow. Your living room will not only be sparkling but you won't have to buy new furnishings anytime soon. With those brand new looking things, why should you?
If you are still not happy there are other ways to refresh the look of your living room as well. Try updating your room by painting the walls. Buy new curtains, drapes and/or blinds. Another thing you may consider is replacing the area rug altogether, after all you already have it outside.
Last but not the least, maximize the benefits of area rugs. You may already have one or none yet, but know that an area rug in the living room is a surefire way of making this space one attractive and inviting nook at home. Coordinate the rug's color with the rest of the room and you'll have a living room that is so well put together. It will also have the mark of a relaxing and welcoming place for family and friends.
